Becoming a Core Knowledge K–8 School

Making the commitment to be a Core Knowledge school is a very important decision that involves a great deal of discussion among the school staff, parents, and others involved with the operations of the school.

Core Knowledge schools make the following goals:

  1. To teach all of the topics included in the Core Knowledge Sequence.
  2. To teach all of the topics at the grade levels assigned by the Sequence. .
  3. To teach the topics to all students whenever possible, moving topics only when necessary to meet explicit state expectations.

When a school staff makes the commitment to begin implementation, we will ask you to complete a school profile form in order to include your name in the Friends of Core Knowledge Schools database. Full implementation is not required to join the network of schools, but there is an expectation that within five years full implementation will be achieved.  When 80% -100% implementation has been achieved, the school is welcome to apply for Official Visitation School status

Official Core Knowledge Preschools/Visitation Sites have made a serious commitment to Core Knowledge. These schools have submitted a copy of their yearlong monthly planning guide, three units (which have been implemented at the school) on a Core Knowledge topic, and other supporting documents. They have also kept their Official Preschool status up-to-date by submitting yearly renewals. Official schools are identified with the Official Core Knowledge.

Official Core Knowledge Schools implement at least 80% of the Core Knowledge Sequence, with the goal of reaching 100% implementation. These schools have submitted the required documentation (listed on the application) and have fully participated in the professional development offered by the Core Knowledge Foundation. In addition, each school has been visited by our staff or consultants and deemed certified.

Official Core Knowledge School and Visitation Sites are schools that have been deemed exemplary according to the criteria set forth by the Core Knowledge Foundation.  In addition to meeting the requirements to be an Official Core Knowledge school, these schools are implementing 100% of the Sequence and have been designated as model schools for interested parties to visit and see Core Knowledge fully implemented!

Nationally, as of July 2008, schools implementing Core Knowledge are:

  • 53% public
  • 28% charter
  • 12% private
  • 7% parochial
  • 39% urban

It is important to understand that meeting these commitments do not happen overnight. Implementation can occur over a two- to three-year period, with schools phasing in topics subject-by-subject or adding additional grade levels each year.

All schools that want to implement Core Knowledge should contact us to establish a relationship and obtain current information.  We will talk with you about the steps involved in implementing Core Knowledge and the resources and professional development opportunities that can help make implementation easier.  We want to assist you and make sure that you have accurate and updated information about Core Knowledge since we are constantly updating and improving the services that we provide to schools.  Please see the page How to Get Started for a list of things to consider when implementing Core Knowledge in your school.

To maintain your status as a Friend of Core Knowledge, or as an Official Core Knowledge School, please update your profile once a year.
