New Social Skills Training

The Foundation  is pleased to announce a new partnership with Project Achieve. We would also like to remind school leaders and CK Coordinators not to overlook the importance of the Leadership Institutes.

Social Skills Training: Project ACHIEVE

The Core Knowledge Foundation has recently partnered with Project ACHIEVE in order to provide schools with training and on-site consultation in social skills.

Project ACHIEVE’s social skills training will enhance your school's implementation of Core Knowledge by helping you to create a positive, safe, supportive, and consistent school environment. The training will assist you in improving students' social skills and in developing staff resources and systemic resources for managing and guiding behavior.

Developed by Dr. Howard Knoff, Project ACHIEVE is an innovative whole-school reform process. Project ACHIEVE partners with schools to improve the academic and behavioral outcomes of all students, and it addresses the needs of particular students who might be academically and/or socially at-risk or underachieving. It is a school-based consultation program that develops critical staff skills and intervention approaches to address the immediate and long-term academic and behavioral needs of all students. Project ACHIEVE places particular emphasis on increasing student performance in the areas of

  • social skills and conflict resolution
  • improving student achievement and academic progress
  • facilitating positive school climates
  • increasing parental involvement and support

This is accomplished through an integrated process that involves strategic planning, school staff and resource development, comprehensive in-service training and follow-up, student-focused instruction and intervention, and parent and community involvement, all leading to direct and preventive services for all students.

Core Knowledge Coordinator and Leadership Institute

The K–8 Schools Department suggests that principals and CK Coordinators participate in the Coordinator and Leadership Institutes, which are usually scheduled during the summer and fall of the school year. This institute gives school leaders the tools and skills they need to lead their school to successful implementation.

Guided by expert Core Knowledge trainers, school leaders will refine their classroom observation and school support skills and review key professional development goals and opportunities such as the development of a curriculum plan that integrates Core Knowledge with state and local standards. Participants also discuss and practice strategies for evaluating the progress of CK implementation using rubrics, checklists, and evaluation forms.

And remember, you don’t have to wait for us to invite you to a Leadership Institute. If you know fifteen leaders in your region who are interested, we’ll help put together a workshop just for you. Email or call (800) 238-3233, ext. 357, for information.
