The First Core Knowledge Regional Conference is Full of Firsts

Two-hour interactive workshops will be offered on both days of the conference. We’ll debut workshops on parental involvement, the Middle Ages, introduction to synthetic phonics, and current theories of cognitive learning skills. Popular workshops presented at the National Conference on information literacy, building confidence in mathematics, introducing social skills in early childhood, and character education will also be offered in Colorado Springs.

New 75-minute sessions on the history of the American West will be presented by museum and National Park Service education experts. Core Knowledge sessions devoted to an overview of professional development, the Core Knowledge Teacher Handbooks, and Unit Writing will be presented for the first time.

The Colorado conference will also feature not one but two General Sessions! On Thursday afternoon, longtime Core Knowledge champion Dennis Denenberg will talk about the heroes you find inside and outside of the classroom. Then, at the General Session on Saturday, Michael DiSpezio, science educator and National Geographic workshop presenter, will speak about mental and cognitive calisthenics.

The Core Knowledge Conference Gets Greener

The Share the Knowledge CD has saved trees since its inception in 2003. Before the CD, units were printed by grade-level and subject-area and distributed to attendees at the conference. Each year we would ship approximately three tons of paper to the conference site!

In Colorado Springs, each conference attendee will receive a session-abstract notebook in addition to the Share the Knowledge CD. The coil-bound, 195-page notebook will contain a synopsis of every conference workshop and session and pages for notes. This will eliminate the need for multi-page handouts that can get lost or not picked up in the first place. Better still, this means that every conference participant will receive all the session handouts, so at least you’ll have essential information from those sessions that didn’t fit your schedule.

Can you ever have too many Core Knowledge tote bags? We don’t like to admit it, but yes you can! That’s why we’re using biodegradable tote bags at the Core Knowledge Regional Conference. There’s no need to feel guilty if you just don’t have the need for one more tote bag.

Connect with Old Friends, Meet New Ones

The “Know Your Neighbor” welcome reception on Thursday, November 8, from 7:00–9:00 pm, is the perfect place to introduce your school to other Core Knowledge teachers. Bring a poster board featuring information and pictures from your school and we’ll display it throughout the conference. If your school has so many accomplishments that a poster board won’t suffice, you can reserve a table for $50.

The Core Collegia on Friday, November 10, will give you the chance to exchange classroom-specific ideas with colleagues from other schools.

After the Core Collegia, continue your discussion or start new ones at the Colorado Springs Dine-Around beginning at 5:45 pm on Friday. Scholastic, Inc. has sponsored the shuttle-bus that will take you to downtown Colorado Springs for dining and entertainment. The shuttle will leave the Palmer Center in downtown Colorado Springs every half-hour until 10:00 p.m. for your convenience.

The Exhibit Hall breakfast buffet on Friday morning and the lighter fare lunch on Saturday will provide you with sustenance for the mind and body. Both events are included in your registration fee.

We saved you a seat at the Core Knowledge Regional Conference. We can save you time, too! Visit www.coreknowledge.org/conference to register online.
