Advocates and Partnerships
Core Knowledge Advocate Program
One of our basic goals at Core Knowledge is to increase the number of K-8 students — particularly children with low economic status — who experience a solid, specific, sequenced and shared curriculum. To achieve this objective we have created the Core Knowledge Advocate Program, a nationwide effort to increase the number of schools in the Core Knowledge network.
Through the Advocate Program, we will identify representatives to assist the foundation in recruiting potential Core Knowledge schools. Each advocate serves as an independent agent of the Foundation. Core Knowledge advocates are a source of information concerning the Core Knowledge movement, and they are authorized to present the Core Knowledge curriculum to school boards, individual schools, community groups, state associations, and teacher conferences. The Core Knowledge Foundation remains the sole source provider of all formal Core Knowledge workshops and professional development. It is important to note that advocates are not paid employees of the foundation. They are compensated solely on a commission basis, which helps to insure that advocates are dedicated, first and foremost, to the mission of the Core Knowledge Foundation.
To learn more about the Core Knowledge Advocate Program, or if you would like to be considered for a position as Core Knowledge Advocate, please contact Gerald L. Terrell at gterrell@coreknowledge.org or call (434)-977-7550 (ext. 231).
Partnering to Align Core Knowledge with State Standards
The Core Knowledge Foundation understands the pressure that schools and teachers are feeling these days to meet their state standards. Partnering with the Foundation to align your state’s standards to the Core Knowledge Sequence may be the key to meeting—and exceeding—those standards.
Typically, we work with individual schools to complete alignments as part of the Getting Started workshop. The process of aligning a curriculum provides an invaluable learning experience and a meaningful professional development experience. However, we realize that not all schools have the luxury of time to dedicate to this activity.
To this end, the Core Knowledge Foundation has begun working with a number of partners to develop complete, detailed alignments of the Core Knowledge Sequence with various states’ standards. Partnering with the Core Knowledge Foundation gives groups the opportunity to have the Sequence aligned for them by Core Knowledge experts. Schools are then provided with electronic versions of the alignments so that teachers can continue to work with these documents, and the Foundation can then post samples of the alignment on its website for use in professional development workshops with other schools.
Eventually, the Foundation’s goal is to develop detailed alignments for all fifty states. Unfortunately, completing these alignments and keeping track of yearly revisions for all states is too large a task for our small staff. That is why Core Knowledge encourages you to become a partner in this effort. Whether you are an individual school, a whole district, or a member of a consortium of schools across the state, partnering with Core Knowledge will bring substantial benefits.
To learn more about partnering with the Core Knowledge Foundation in order to complete an alignment for your state, please contact Gerald L. Terrell at gterrell@coreknowledge.org or 434-977-7550 X 231.
